2016-17 Welcome Back Letter from the Superintendent

Greetings parents, students, staff and our entire Upper Deerfield Township Community,

Each new school year brings about the promise of hope and opportunity for our students as we as we strive to find ways that we can make the learning experiences better than they were the prior year.  During the 2016-17 school year we will continue to set the foundation of excellence, honoring traditions, and continue to expect the best.  As the educational leader in our school district, I am very fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful educational community here in Upper Deerfield.  We have created an expectation for students to settle for nothing less than their best and this can be attributed to the collaboration among all the stakeholders in our community.  It is my hope everyone had a relaxing summer as it is time to welcome all of you back for the 2016-17 school year.   Our first day for students to report is a full day of school on Tuesday, September 6, 2016.  The start to a new school year is filled with eagerness, excitement, enthusiasm, zest, zeal, and some apprehension.  I can assure you that our schools are ready, classrooms are prepared, and teachers and administrators are excited to work with your children and you this coming year.

We are in the second year of our full day pre-school program and our first year met with much success.   As we move forward in this capacity the more students we can serve at the pre-school level the greater impact this will have on their overall academic, social and emotional development in their formative years.  This cohort will be tracked moving forward to determine the overall impact that our program had on readiness and academic performance.

Our classrooms, gyms, computer labs, media centers and front offices will soon be bustling with excited students ready to do amazing things with the guidance and support of our administration, teachers, staff, and you, our parents.  Whether it’s in the classroom, in the community, on stage, or on the athletic field, I can’t wait to see what our students will accomplish this year. Across the district, our combined efforts as a community and school will provide our students with the opportunity to achieve educational excellence.

Communication is important and we place a high value on home/school communication in Upper Deerfield as this is vital to the success of each student.  I encourage you to contact us if/when the need arises, and to remain connected by visiting our website as well as read the monthly newsletter for information regarding your child’s studies, assignments, assessments, and school activities, as well as other events in our district.

Finally, I ask your patience on the first few days of school as buses tend to run late during the first week as they get acclimated to the stop.  There are many unavoidable circumstances that go into this.  In the morning, it is usually a young child that is struggling to board the bus for the first time.   In the afternoon, it is because hundreds of students are trying to remember which bus they board to take home.  In addition, there may be traffic issues that could impact our pick-up and delivery process. In anticipation of unforeseen events, all of our schools are well versed in their arrival and dismissal plans.

We welcome the community at all of our student performances, athletic events, PTO meetings and Board of Education meetings. You may contact the Woodruff School office at 856-455-2267 ext. 3201, or e-mail me at kozap@udts.org .  I welcome your suggestions as to how our district can better serve your needs.

We are enthusiastic and motivated to make this another great year for our students in Upper Deerfield Township School District.

Sincerely,

Peter L. Koza, Ed.D., Superintendent
