Welcome Back Letter from the Superintendent!

Greetings parents, students, staff and our entire Upper Deerfield Township Community,

The days are still warm and long and the beach still calls us to enjoy the ocean and sand, but it won’t be long that before our school year begins. Our staff in Upper Deerfield is busily preparing for another school year abundant with opportunities and challenges for every student. Our first day for students to report is a full day of school on Thursday, September 7, 2017. The start to a new school year is filled with eagerness, excitement, enthusiasm, zest, zeal, and some apprehension. I can assure you that our schools are ready, classrooms are prepared, and teachers and administrators are excited to work with your children as they have each year.

As I welcome you to the 2017-18 school year I remind you that every school year brings about the promise of hope and opportunity for our students as we as we strive to find ways that we can make the learning experiences better than they were the prior year. During the 2017-18 school year we will continue to set the foundation of excellence, honoring traditions, and continue to expect the best. As the educational leader in our school district, I am very fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful educational community here in Upper Deerfield. Together, we have created an expectation for students to settle for nothing less than their best and this can be attributed to the collaboration among all the stakeholders in our community.

We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she does the following:

  • Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experiences.

  • Completes all homework assignments given by teachers.

  • Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills.

  • Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life.

  • Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject and ask that you encourage your child to ask the teacher for additional assistance or you contact your child’s teacher or administrator and share this with them so additional help can be arranged.

  • Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school and prepare for college and/or career.

Communication is important and we place a high value on home/school communication in Upper Deerfield as this is vital to the success of each student. The student handbook will be sent home and this contains our school rules so that you and your child can review them together. If you have any questions about the rules and expectations, please feel free to contact the principal or me or to discuss them with your child’s teacher. It is very important that you and your child are fully informed regarding standards related to appropriate behavior for a safe and productive school year. In addition, the PTO calendar will have information regarding activities and our website, contains information and resources to assist you as well. The parent portal on our student information system (GENESIS) will provide updates to the grades earned by your child (a password is required) for the upper grade levels as will class DOJO for the lower grade levels. I encourage you to contact us if/when the need arises, and to remain connected by visiting our website as well as read the monthly newsletter for information regarding your child’s studies, assignments, assessments, and school activities, as well as other events in our district.

Finally, I ask your patience on the first few days of school as buses tend to run late during the first week as they get acclimated to the stop. There are many unavoidable circumstances that go into this. In the morning, it is usually a young child that is struggling to board the bus for the first time. In the afternoon, it is because hundreds of students are trying to remember which bus they board to take home. In addition, there may be traffic issues that could impact our pick-up and delivery process. In anticipation of unforeseen events, all of our schools are well versed in their arrival and dismissal plans.

We welcome the community at all of our student performances, athletic events, PTO meetings and Board of Education meetings. You may contact the Woodruff School office at 856-455-2267 ext. 3201, or e-mail me at . I welcome your suggestions as to how our district can better serve your needs.

We are enthusiastic and motivated to make this another great year for our students in our Upper Deerfield Township School District where all things are possible!
